not Sure why anyone would do this,if you wanted the bird to thin out then just decrease its daily feed, maybe in countries where cockfighting is legal then it might be to do with conditioning or preparation of some kind, but its not something i would consider doing to any animal of mine, but that's just me.

Pea,
Here in the South this is a common practice with mature cocks. This is only done in extremely hot weather. doc

What Doc said. You do not skip in the winter but when it gets real hot in the summer I skip a feed ocassionally without any bad results.

 Re: Skipping a days feeding.
I Skip a day a week unless the weather is extremly cold. Feed only. It helps keep a rooster in good shape and lets him get used to feeling alittle empty. It makes him hunt alittle and scratch alittle harder for himself. I handle my roosters often and like to keep my cocks in good flesh. But not fat. I dont feed the same amount of feed to all my cocks. True some get the same some get more and some get less. You have to handle your cocks and get to know them. To me I want to see a hungry cock. one tugging at his cord every time I feed. I dont want a cock that half hearted hops of his barrel and pecks at his food. I want a cock that hits his food scratching and a pecking. But at the same time good flesh with no fat. This method works for me. I have found if you cut back on his daily feed he will tend to get thin, by missing a day it keeps him were he should be mentaly and phisicaly. A cock that isint missed will tend to leave some feed on the ground certain days. Animals tend to hold feed when certain fronts move in. The last three days of a keep a cock get less and less feed. Friday AM or thursday Pm may be the last bit of feed he will see till after his show on Saturday night. And that will be dam little maybe a couple of pecks. So by missing a day you arnt doing them any harm, if anything in my opinion your helping your fowl. Remmember empty is sharp.

 Re: Skipping a days feeding.
Thanks folks. Good advice Finch. I skip a days feeding with my dogs as all carnivores digestive systems need time to rest and not be full all the time. They don't loose an ounce. But fowl are omnivourous and I wondered would there be side effects. In the warmer months I think I'll skip a day. Finch I'm with you about when to feed last before a show but tell me this, do you give a bird a beakfull of food just before he goes in ?

 Re: Skipping a days feeding.
Heck no. It wont hurt if its quick but it sure will in a hour. Why would you. Just wet the bottom of his feet and hocks alittle and wet the mouth with your tounge no tobacco. A empty cock is a sharp cock. Ive said it before and Ill say it again Feed has killed more good cocks than anything else. Never put water from the p-t in your cocks mouth. Just warm saliva. Just to moisten.

Thanks Finch, I've heard of a small bit of banana or similar given just before going in and wondered myself why?

 Re: Skipping a days feeding.
I know a fellow that does that too Woodland but no way would I do it. Putting enough food with a bird to last 2 days feeds rats and not fowl IMO.
