Predator control at close range - looking for a metal smith
I would like to have something that I could keep in the barn, safely covered in a corner for use at a moment's notice. I don't want to keep a firearm out there all the time, but I would like something handheld.
Opossums become a big problem out in the unsecured part of the barn, where the mutt yard birds are kept, from about this time of yr until spring. They are quite easily approached and dealt with using a pitch fork, but it takes so long, what with the clubbing and all that's required too.
Traps are not an option due to the barn cats (for rodent control) getting in them. What I really need is a stabbing device. I have been looking at yari online. They look quite efficient with the double edge and blood groove. However, even the cheap decorative ones that serve no basic function are expensive.
I was wondering if anyone here knows of a metal smith who may be able to make a fukuro-yari head from a decent grade high carbon steel at a reasonable price (under $90)? I can make the handle. If they are skilled in steel folding methods, even better. Please let me know. Thanks!
David

If it's just possums you are worried about, just pick em up by the tail, and toss em to your dog. If you ain't got that dog yet, get one! lol As for a spear type weapon, if I was still working I could hook you up...

I do need an lgd, but a yari doesn't eat $200 worth of feed a yr. With some occasional sharpening and good care, it should last a lifetime. Or, until I can afford to feed another dog. I found an old one in great condition with maker's mark on a Japanese auction that sold for $30. Why can't they go for that here... No, but I could have made you the next best thing. I could have machined you something that would have served your purposes just fine. I did talk to someone the other day on the chat though, that their father used to hand make knifes, plus do the folding. Maybe they will see this?

Any recollection of who it was? Also, if anyone happens to come across a decent real (not just decorative) fukuro-yari for sale, please let me know. Thanks! David

try this get a pipe about 3 or 4 feet long that you can put and ninja sai handle down in and drill a hole from one side of the pipe in to the sai handle and out the other side of the pipe just dont use a big bit or it will bust the sai then just put a bolt and nut in it we use them for frogs in our pond here is a page where you can get a sai if you want to use this http://www.blade-empire.com/Martial_Arts_Sai.shtml o and if you have a grinder put a good sharp end on all three tips and with this you can make two of them one for the house and one for the shed

Thanks. That would probably work, but I'd like something without hang-ups on the sides since 'possums often hide back between barrels or something. David

The tobacco spear looks like something that could be made without too much trouble.
Re: the fence post; Were you able to stab it, or did you just bash it really good?
