Re: What is the best way to keep hawks away from my fowls?

Anybody else notice that the hawks seem to go after grey pullets with extreme prejudice? Or is it just me? I've only lost grey pullets to them at this point, penned the last 3 up at this point. Figure they're the smarter ones. They target what they see best , right ? any white sticks out like a sore thumb

Re: What is the best way to keep hawks away from my fowls?
Make good friends with the crows. I have more eggs than I could ever eat for myself and so every few days I put those eggs out in the yard in the mornings. Plus I have a bird feeder out in the front yard. The crows will come around several times a day looking for snacks and I have seen them identify a hawk that I didn't even know was there and harry it off. I've heard crows will snatch young chicks but I don't have anything that I let loose on the yard with babies. I also have a few mixed breed "yard" chickens that I wouldn't just cry about if they get eaten. (of course those are the ones that never do lol) Mostly my bantams stay put up and larger birds can go loose when I am home.
Crows work pretty good if you can keep them coming around a few times a day.

White absolutely glows in a birds vision, makes Greys, Goldens, Spangles, anything with white or yellow in the plumage the easiest thing to see. I see what your saying, but haven't lost a single stag to them. Only my grey pullets. Maybe your stags are a bit more wary than your pullets? Or maybe the hawks are a little nervous about the barrels?
