Post The Spanish Game
The Spanish Game or -Combatiente Espagnol- is an authentic gamefowl breed. It was already known in the antique times. In these times the birds were fought in natural heels as well as artificial spurs (by the Romans). Spanish game are also named after their region of origin. The most reputed strains are known as Jerezano, Canario and Sevillano. Spanish Game are extremely agile, quick and accurate. For this reason they are also used for crossing onto other breeds. In South and Central America the Spanish Game are known under various other names for instance Cuban Game, Dominican Game, Mexican Game, etcetera. Spanish Game are divided into 3 varieties: Gallo Real (= normal variety) Gallo Galino (= henny feathered variety) and the Gallo Reculo or Bolo (= rumpless variety). In Spain the breed is still used for fighting purposes (naked heel). The breed is also standarized for exhibition purposes. The breed comes in a wide variety of colours. Weight male 1,5 to 2 Kg (3,3 to 4,4 Lbs) female 1 to 1,5 kg (2,2 to 3,3 Lbs)

It is a fact that most if not all of the Old English Std. Game have some Oriental blood in them which is why they weigh 6 lbs or more.

I believe the Spanish Game and the original Old English Game were basically the same ancient game that came from Persia or even further east. These birds were deciminated all over the Med. world by the Phoenicians. Thus, if we desired to see a "real" Old English Game before the inclusion of Oriental blood we would need to look at the Spanish Game.

Post Re: The Spanish Game
Gomer,
I'm talking about all over the world. We know from H.A. and C. Finsterbush that such things as yellow legs did not exist in the OEG (on which also the Amer Game is founded) before the mid-1700's, but by H.A.'s day many came yellow legged. Also, the peacomb (often seen in Amer. Games and mentioned in some strains of OEG before the advent of the shows) had to come from somewhere and it sure ain't from the bankiva.

As to weights, the OEG of years gone by was a small bird of our 4-5 lbs. Today, that is just not the case. Both H.A. and Finsterbush tell us that the larger OEG and it's cousin the Amer Game recieved this added weight by infusions of Malayoid fowl.

The Spanish Game it the best living example, in my opinion, of what the original OEG looked like. doc
